Tips to make a Small Home feel Bigger

From clever layouts to smart design tricks, you’ll find everything you need in this blog post. What is your go-to trick for creating more space? Let us know!

Emphasise the Ceiling Height

Create a feeling of height by choosing tall windows or doors, utilising vertical wall space for floor to ceiling storage, use ceiling mounted curtain tracks for long curtains or consider wall mounted storage to free up floor space.

Maximise Natural Light

Use sheer curtains or blinds to allow more natural light into the space. Also add skylights to the home where possible if building or renovating.

Consistent Ceiling Level

Avoid placing a steel beam below the existing ceiling level. Speak to your engineer or builder about pushing the steel beam into the space between the ceiling and the floor above to give one ceiling finish throughout.

Unified Floor Finish

Using one floor finish will make the space feel bigger, rather than cutting the space into smaller zones.

Strategic Furniture Placement

Arrange furniture to create open pathways and avoid blocking natural flow. Consider multifunctional furniture that serves multiple purposes, e.g. storage ottoman, height adjustable coffee / dining table.

Choose the Right Sized Furniture

It is essential to size the furniture correctly. A table or sofa that is too big in the space will make it feel cramped. If a cosy seating area is your priority, choose a big sofa and a smaller dining table. Or if you like to entertain, choose a full-sized table and a small sofa or 2 armchairs.

Be Careful with Lighting Positions

Use wall light or spotlights to allow a visual flow through the space. Use feature pendants to create zones (e.g. over the dining table or over the island), but only when you are sure of the position of these items.

Declutter and Organise

Keep surfaces clutter-free to give the appearance of a larger space. Invest in smart storage solutions to keep belongings organised and out of sight.

Choose Light Colours

Use a light colour palette for walls, furniture, and decor to make the space feel airy. Consider neutral tones and pastels for a fresh and open look.
